Portfolio Transfer Procedure
The Portfolio Transfer Procedure Explained
1- Before you initiate the transfer process, it is important to get the latest statement from your existing account. This information is useful to your new stockbroker. Especially regarding your account number, the type of account you have, and details of the current investments.
2- After discussing your options with the new broker, it is time to open an account with them. Most brokerage firms allow their investors to open accounts using a quick online process. You will typically need the following information:
- Your name
- Current address
- Date of birth
- Income
- Drivers’ license number
In addition, the account that you are planning to open should match with the account you are transferring.
3- Next, you initiate the funds transfer process through the new broker. You will be taken through a step-by-step process that includes completing a Transfer Initiation Form. The new stockbroker will then be working with your old stockbroker to transfer your assets accordingly.
4- Now you sit back and relax. Most portfolio transfers nowadays take place through an automated process. Your new broker will be responsible for reviewing your assets for in-kind transfer. The transfer process is complete in three to six days in most cases. Once this is done, you are free to enjoy your new account with the new brokerage company.
What Will Moving a Portfolio Cost?
Moving an investment portfolio involves exit and process fees, but the exact amount varies from platform to platform. In addition, portfolio transfers are typically costlier and more complex than simple cash transfers and you might be unable to trade while the transfer is taking place. While stock transfers can be completed electronically within a week, mutual fund transfers can sometimes take several weeks.
Transfer charges apply per share or per fund that is being moved from one broker to another. There are charges which apply when you sell your investments and transfer cash to buy the new ones. One of the leading brokers in the UK, Hargreaves Lansdown, charges a closure fee of £25 to make the transfer in cash and £25 to transfer the stock investment. Sometimes, stockbrokers may have a company policy in place to charge a transfer fee on the occasion you decide to leave them.
The good news is that trade commissions have declined in the past few years. Investors who are looking to move their portfolios and transfer their brokerage accounts are able to save considerably on these transactions. Using a process that is commonly referred to as the in-transfer, an investor can switch brokerage accounts and transfer portfolios much more quickly and cheaply.
